A- Completed Projects
|
 |
Work continued during this period in some 35 major projects in the three refineries. Six of those projects were completed and commissioned this year while work progress in the other projects is well underway according to pre set timetables .On top of the projects which were completed in the current fiscal year were the following: |
|
| |
| 1-OCR Revamp of ARDs Unit-12-MAB |
 |
The project aims at renovating both trains of the Atmpspheric Residue Desulfurization – ARDs in Mina Abdulla Refinery using on stream catalyst replacement technology OCR of Chevron to increase capacity of each unit from 33,000B/D to 42,000 B/D .The project serves two purposes ; improvement of distillates yield and achieving a higher cycle length for the fixed bed reactor catalyst. The project was completed in March 2009. |
|
| |
| 2-LNG Import At South Pier-MAA |
This project is designed to provide facilities for receiving supplies of LNG imported as fuel for power generation plants during the peak months in summer. The project’s scope of work included rehabilitation of the South Pier for offloading, dock side transfer and loading specially equipped vessels which will store and re gasify the imported LNG quantities and deliver them to the high pressure gas network operated by KOC. The project was completed in August 2009. |
| |
| 3-Enhancement of the Local Marketing Supply and Distribution Facilities |
The project’s objective is to modify piping at Mina Al-Ahmadi Refinery and Shuaiba Refinery and both Sabhan and Ahmadi Depots so as to provide those facilities with the capability to meet maximum demand on gasoline from any of the two depots especially when the other is out of service for one reason or another. The project constituted a significant enhancement of the gasoline distribution network. It was commissioned in May 2009. |

| B- Projects Under Implementation |
 |
The most important projects planned by KNPC are undoubtedly the New Refinery Project at Al-Zoor Area and the Clean Fuel Project which is basically designed to upgrade the company two refineries at Mina Al-Ahmadi and Mina Abdulla .The two giant projects constitute the backbone of the strategic vision of the downstream industry being shouldered by KNPC. |
|
| The New Refinery Project (NRP) |
The Main objectives of the NRP can be outlined as follows: |
Produces 225,000BPSD of low sulfur Fuel Oil(1.0wt.%Sulfur)to meet the growing demand of power generation plants in Kuwait.
Meets strategic national objectives of Kuwait with respect to improvement of air quality by reducing pollutant emissions.
Processes Kuwait Export, Medium and Heavy grade crudes.
Provides economic outlets for a good portion of Kuwaiti heavy crude.
Provides 340,000 bpd of export products.
Contributes to the economy of Kuwait.
One of the largest refining plants in the world with a total capacity of 615,000 B/D.
|
KPC and KNPC are currently awaiting for the Supreme Council of Petroleum’s approval to start putting the project on implementation track. |
| Clean Fuel Project CFP |
CFP envisages radical upgradation of Mina Al-Ahmadi and Mina Abdulla refineries with a view to creating a tightly integrated refining complex with a total capacity of 800,000 barrels a day.
It was termed as Clean Fuel project because of its environment friendly petroleum products supplied to the local as well as to the international markets.
The project will also optimize the refineries process capability. The Supreme Council of Petroleum approved allocation of KD 245 million to finance the first stage of the project which comprises engineering designs FEED according to changes proposed by KPC on the projects specifications and designs and to pick up the licensors. |
| Fourth Gas Plant Train at MAA |
The project’s objective is to install a 4th Gas Plant Train at MAA for processing additional associated gas at the rate of 800,000 cubic feet per day & and 160,000 a day of condensates produced by Kuwait Oil Company and LPG produced by KNPC refineries. |
| The project is set for completion in January 2014 at a total cost of KD 256 million. |
| Modernisation of Obsolete Instrumentation at Old Refinery &RMP Area-MAA |
Modernisation of existing instrumentation at the old refinery and the modernization project area of Mina Al-Ahmadi became quite essential as the consultant’s study indicated that they became obsolete and impossible to support or maintain because they are outdated. Therefore the project was intended to replace the instruments and associated equipment. The project’s execution is set to complete in July 2010. |
| New AGRP And Revamp of Existing Acid Gas Removal Plant |
This project is designed to install a new AGRP unit of 146 MMSCFD of gas feed (with5%H2S) and condensate of 39 BPSD and revamp of the existing Acid Gas Removal Plant at Mina Al-Ahmadi Refinery to a similar capacity based on the projected feed availability from KOC. The project is in the tendering Process and its completion is expected in May 2014. |
| Revamp of Effluent Treatment Facilities at The Three Refineries |
The Project's objective is to upgrade existing Waste Water Treatment Facilities at the three refineries so as to meet mandatory standards of Industrial Waste Water Discharge stipulated by Environment Public Authority of Kuwait (K-EPA). |
 |
The Project’s scope of work includes installing tertiary water treatment facilities as one single plant for processing of combined oily streams and surplus stripped sour water from MAB &SHU at Mina Abdulla Refinery. It also includes installing or debottlenecking of other facilities in the three refineries. The project is nearing completion and is set to be commissioned in December 2010. |
|
| Flare Gas Recovery Unit At MAA-RMP&FUP |
Under this project a new Flare Gas Recovery Unit will be installed to handle hydrocarbon flare at the RMP And FUP of MAA Refinery, so that flaring will be stopped significantly and environmental pollution due to this flaring is reduced. Later acid flare gas is also added to the project scope by MAA. FEED was prepared and the project is in the tendering phase .It is due to be completed by September 2012. |
| Four New Filling Stations |
KNPC launched plans to build four new filling stations at Um Al-Aish,Waha, Jahraa and Jaber Stadium to ease pressure on the existing facilities in the neighbouring areas, and to meet growing demand on fuel as a result of the increase in vehicles population. Preparations to conclude construction contracts are being now finalised. |
| Supply Chain Optimization project |
The Supply Chain Optimization has been termed as one of the major strategic projects currently executed by KNPC. Its main objective is to upgrade the company core system and business processes in short and mid term planning ,refinery scheduling and operational performance management .It is a new business initiative intended to create customer focused organization that delivers on spec products on schedule with minimum giveaway while maximizing the refinery utilization and overall profitability. The project provides the management with instant data so as to be able to take the proper decisions. |
